Why Holistic Nutrition?
Western medicine has been the leader in the health industry for a long time. Here in North America, medical doctors have been looked up to for having the answers for all of our health issues. Western medicine focuses on symptoms and finding a treatment for those symptoms. Usually it is through pharmaceuticals or surgeries. However, they rarely get to the root cause of what is going on in your body. Nowadays, doctors barely spend more than 5 minutes with you and they put a Band-Aid over your issue with an antibiotic or some other prescription drug. They certainly almost never ask what you are eating, how you are sleeping, or how much stress you are dealing with. Don’t get me wrong, Western medicine definitely has its place in the world and antibiotics and surgeries have saved lives for many years. However, I got into holistic nutrition because it is PREVENTIVE medicine.
Alternative practices, such as nutrition and naturopathic medicine are finally starting to get looked at more seriously in the Western world. This makes me so happy because these alternative methods try to prevent disease and illness from ever happening. If disease is already there, they try to get the body back into a state of homeostasis (or balance), through natural methods. With holistic nutrition, the goal is to try to prevent things like type 2 diabetes or heart disease from ever happening, by teaching people how to eat again. The food you put into your body matters. It is so hard for people to eat well in this day and age, especially since the food industry is not on our side. You think you might be making a healthy choice for you and your family by choosing the product that says it is “heart healthy” or “whole grain.” Sadly, so many products out there are secretly full of toxic additives and chemicals. The food industry can be very sneaky and sadly, the bottom line is profit, not health. Same goes for the pharmaceutical industry – profit, not health.
That is why holistic practitioners, such as myself, are out there. We want to help people learn to eat better, to nourish their bodies in a way that will bring them vitality into old age. People these days are living longer than ever before, but what is the quality of life? There are more food related diseases than ever before and so many mental health issues. So, yes, we are living longer, but we aren’t living to our full potential. Wouldn’t it be nice to be in your 90’s and still be able to go for walks, garden, and have a sharp mind? Let’s get to that place. It starts with the choices you make NOW, every day. So, let’s get into my top three reasons why holistic nutrition is the bomb and why we all need to be mindful of the food we are eating!
We know you are more than just a set of symptoms. Holistic nutrition takes into consideration the body, the mind, and the spirit. We spend time looking at the whole picture and figuring out the ROOT CAUSE of your issues. We get to the bottom of it, support your body with whole foods, and prevent it from happening again.
Holistic Nutrition is good for the environment! I don’t want to get into how much the food industry is destroying our planet because that’s a huge topic, but buying local food supports the environment. As a nutrition practitioner, I know that buying what is in season is good for you, so I support local farmers. Buying food as close to home as possible supports a more sustainable food system! Also, it helps us connect to our food and where it is coming from. We are so disconnected from food these days. We just eat the banana, but don’t stop to think about where it is coming from and the long process that took place to get it to you. We need to take more time to connect with and appreciate food again!
Holistic nutrition is simple! I know that all the nutrition information out there can be so confusing and overwhelming, but we get back to basics. It really is just about eating whole and good quality foods. The less ingredients, the better. It is just about choosing foods everyday that will help nourish and support our bodies, instead of taking away from our health. And of course, enjoying the occasional treat!
Thank you for taking the time to read my blog and I hope that now you will take into consideration how holistic nutrition can positively affect your health!
